ABOUT NEW CALEDONIA - POPULATION
New Caledonia is a fascinating mixture of people from many countries, and many cultures. Almost 50% of the population are 'Melanesian Kanaks', who have peopled the islands for 4000 years. Citizens of French origin comprise another 34% of the population and are the reason that the country has a distinct French ambience. The remaining percentage of the population comprise other Pacific Islanders, Indonesians and Vietnamese.
LANGUAGE & EDUCATION
French is the official language, though many people on New Caledonia Island (particularly the main centres) also speak English. There are also 28 local Polynesian and Melanesian dialects in use.
Education is regarded as important and the country has a high literacy rate (over 90%). Primary and secondary education is free. Some tertiary education is also available.
RELIGION
New Caledonia is a strongly Christian country, with the majority being Roman Catholic (60%), Protestant (30%) and other Christian denominations. Asian immigrants brought Islam to the country (4%).
