ABOUT NEW CALEDONIA - GOVERNMENT
New Caledonia is now governed by the institutions stemming from the Noumea Accord signed in May 1998: an assembly in each of its three Provinces, elected by universal suffrage and which appoints its Executive; the Congress of New Caledonia whose members are from the Provincial Assemblies; and a collegial Government elected by the Congress. A Customary Senate and an Economic and Social Council round off the current institutional arrangements.
The areas of responsibility of French State are defence, justice, external affairs, currency, law and order, enforcement of laws and regulations, and compliance with legal principles.
The State is represented by the High Commissioner of the Republic.
