ABOUT NEW CALEDONIA - TRANSPORT & COMMUNICATION
All main roads in New Caledonia are sealed, though countryside roads may not be.
Airport transfers to and from Tontouta International Airport include private cars and taxis.
New Caledonia has a well-established network for local and international communication. Telephones, facsimiles and Internet are all available.
Most hotels have direct dialing and facsimile/telex facilities for international calls. Although you have to pay for operator assistance, you can reduce costs considerably by contacting the operator -19- indicating you wish to place a collect call -PCV-. The hotel will charge for calls placed locally. Inter-provincial calls are obviously more expensive.
Phone cards - la telecarte - can be purchased from post offices or other shops.
