ABOUT TONGA - POLITICS
Tonga has a hereditary constitutional monarchy that has been led by King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV since 1965. The king leads the Privy Council, which also comprises his cabinet ministers, all of whom are elected for life.
The unicameral house of legislature, the Fale Alea, has 30 seats: 12 are reserved for cabinet ministers, nine for nobles selected by the country's 33 nobles, and nine commoners elected by popular vote.
In recent years the pro-democracy movement has been stirring, but, Tongan style, is free from violence.
